Pride Hilo is comprised of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, interesex, and questioning/queer (LGBTIQ) student, staff, and faculty members and heterosexual friends at both campuses. Pride Hilo / GLO was formed in 1991 as the first organized campus based support network for the LGBTIQ people on the island of Hawai`i.The mission of Pride Hilo is to nurture, educate and advocate for LGBTIQ issues across UH campuses and the greater Hawai`i community. Pride Hilo helps coordinate outreach activities that increase awareness of LGBTIQ issues. We have coordinated several successful events to fulfill our mission over the recent years. As part of the UH Hilo Diversity Symposium held in May 2005, Pride Hilo received the “Best Presentation” prize for a panel discussion on ‘Life as a LGBTIQ person on the UH Hilo campus. In the following year, Pride Hilo held the three-day workshop and symposium entitled “Weaving the Fabric of Diversity” in February 2006. In April 2007, Pride Hilo organized an art benefit “Through Out Eyes” which presented artworks of LGBTIQ people and friends. This event raised over $2,000 for Pride Legacy Scholarship, the first ever scholarship specifically targeted for LGBTIQ students in the entire UH system. Furthermore, Pride Hilo actively bridges various boundaries of ethnicity, culture, age, class, and sexual orientation to create an environment of understanding, tolerance and awareness not only within UH campuses but with the wider Hawaii communities. We are currently collaborating with Hawai`i Aids Foundation to promote healthy and safe behaviors, and socio-political groups such as Out Spoken Hawai`i and the Hilo chapter of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) on various projects. We meet on Tuesdays at 5 pm in K-105 |
